2020 Scholarship and Mentor Scholarship

Description

The SAM Scholarship is intended to help fill the gap in financial need for foster youth participating in the Family Care Network’s Independent Living Program as they pursue a post-secondary education.

Requirements

Eligibility:
a) Applicant is a resident of San Luis Obispo County; and,
b) Applicant is a high school senior or recent graduate (Class of 2019) but has not yet begun a post-secondary program; or is enrolled in Independent Study; or a student who has earned a GED in 2018-19 or 2019-20 academic year; and,
c) Applicant is a current or former foster youth and participating in the Family Care Network's Independent Living Program; and
d) Applicant has demonstrated financial need, (confirmed through eligibility for a Federal Pell Grant); and,
e) Applicant plans to attend full time (12-15 units) or part-time (6-12 units) at a four year college, community college or vocational program (Career Technical); and,
f) Applicant must have a minimum of a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

Selection Criteria:
a) Potential based on Academic Record; and,
b) The "Grit" displayed by the perseverance to overcome personal challenges in their life related to family, school or community, and other life circumstances; and,
c) Ambition exhibited by the desire to pursue a post-secondary education.

Scholarship Awards:
Four-year College or University: up to $2,500/year
Community College: up to $2,000/year
Career of Technical school (vocational program): $1,200 to $2,000 award range

Total award value will be dependent on recipient’s post-secondary institution and enrollment status, in addition to maintaining monthly contact with assigned Education Navigator.

NOTE : Participation in the mentorship and goal setting process component is a requirement of all recipients.
