Description

The mission of the Peninsula College Fund (PCF) is to empower low-income, first-generation college students to graduate and obtain a job that aligns with their career goals. We provide four-year scholarships, one-to-one adult mentors, college and career success training and internship support.

Mentor recruitment happens on a rolling basis. However, mentors and scholars are matched in the spring. While a prospective mentor may interview in the fall or winter and may be considered "match-eligible" in PCF's mentoring program, matching will not occur until May/June 2021.

Requirements

Mentor Eligibility
In order to be eligible to mentor with PCF you must have:
• Graduated from a four-year college or university 
• Minimum of 3 years professional experience; 5 years preferred (post-graduation)

Mentor Commitments
PCF Mentors commit to:
• Supporting a first-generation college student from a historically underrepresented community
• Mentoring relationship for four years or until graduation, beginning in May/June 2021
• Providing an average of 2-3 hours monthly mentoring 
• Providing a scholar with academic, social/emotional support, and career guidance 
• Submiting a monthly update to PCF and be open to receiving constructive feedback from staff
• Attending New Mentor Orientation: June, 2021
• Attend PCF Awards Ceremony: June, 2021 
• Participating in at least one training (continuing education sessions for mentors) every year
•  Adhering to a strict confidentiality agreement 

Process

Step 1: Learn More about Mentoring
To learn more about becoming a mentor, interested candidates may review our Mentor webinar, listen to a past scholar discuss the importance of the mentoring relationship, and review the FAQs on our website.

Step 2: Complete Mentor Application 
PCF uses this information to learn more about you and your interest in mentoring. Your aplication may also be used for matching purposes. In addition to completing some short answer questions, you will be asked to submit contact information for 2 professional references, who will be automatically contacted via email. As a reminder, all information is kept confidential. *Please note that not all applicants who submit an application will be invited to interview and all reasons for decisions are confidential.

Step 3: Interview 
Candidates selected to advance will be invited to a virtual, one hour interview. Questions range from mentoring experience to familiarity with scholar backgrounds.*Please note that not all applicants who interview will advance in the process and all reasons for decisions are confidential.

Step 4: Application Review and Background Check 
PCF reviews all application and interview materials. Candidates selected to continue will be contacted to begin a background check.

Step 5: Update with Final Status 
After references and background check are complete, PCF informs candidates of their final mentor status. If approved, candidates are considered "match-eligible" and added to the queue of PCF mentors ready to be matched.  

Step 6: Matching 
Mentor recruitment occurs on a rolling basis, however mentors and scholars are matched in May-June, the summer before scholars begin college.
