Description

The Helen and Ronald Dunin Legacy Scholarship was established to honor the legacy of the Dunins’ desire to help people who are attempting to help themselves.

Ron Dunin was born in Prussia on March 8, 1918. From 1938-1945 Ron was a member of the Polish forces in Poland, France and United Kingdom, and was decorated by the governments of all three countries for his exemplary service. Dunin was captured by German forces and spent time in a German prisoner of war camp, but managed to escape and return to Poland. He later fled to Hungary.

In 1945, Dunin settled in Great Britain, where he met his future wife, Helen. In 1963, Ron and Helen moved to the United States settling in San Luis Obispo in 1965. Dunin served on the San Luis Obispo City Council for 15 years, and was elected mayor of San Luis Obispo, a position he occupied for seven years, 1985-1992.

Requirements

Eligibility Criteria
a. Applicant is currently a senior at a public high school in San Luis Obispo County; and,
b. Applicant plans to attend full time (12-15 units) four-year college/university; and,
c. Applicant holds a minimum unweighted high school cumulative GPA of 2.7 to a maximum cumulative GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale; and,
d. Applicant will be a first-generation student (neither  biological parent completed a four-year college degree); and,
e. Applicant has demonstrated financial need.

Selection Criteria
a. Applicant exhibits a strong desire to learn; and,
b. Applicant demonstrates involvement in school and/or community service activities or provides work history throughout their high school years

NOTE: Extra consideration applicant's involvement in college readiness or youth development organizations during high school years.

Award Amount
The committee intends to award two multi-year scholarships.
$12,000 step-up award: $2,000 year one, $3,000 year two, $3,000 year three and $4,000 year four.
