Description

The Garris Family Scholarship was established to support deserving students from public high schools or home-schooled programs in San Luis Obispo County in achieving post-secondary education at a vocational school, community college or four-year college/university.

Requirements

Eligibility Criteria:
a) Applicant is currently a senior at a public high school in San Luis Obispo County; or a home-schooled graduating student or student who has earned their GED during the current school year; and,
b) Applicant plans to attend full time (12-15 units) or part-time (6-12 units) at a community college or four year college/university or a career or technical school (vocational programs); and,
c) Applicant has demonstrated financial need and is Pell grant eligible; and,
d)  A minimum unweighted high school cumulative GPA of 2.7 to a maximum cumulative GPA of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale

Selection Criteria:
a) Applicant exhibits a strong desire to learn, and;
b) Applicant demonstrates involvement in school and/or community activities experience or provides work history throughout their high school years;
c) Applicant exhibits personal success skills (e.g., emotional maturity, motivation, perseverance, self-reliance etc.);
d) Applicant involvement in college readiness, youth development organizations or vocational programs during high school years.

NOTE: Preference will be given to students who are first generation in their family to attend college

Award Amount:
The committee intends to award multiple scholarships. Total award value will be dependent on recipient’s post-secondary institution.
• Four-year college/university – award range $8,000 to $10,000 over four years ($2,000-$2,500/year)
• Community College – award range $3,000 to $4,000 over two years ($1,500 to $2,000 over one to two years)
• Career or technical school (vocational program) – award range $1,500 to $2,000 over one to two years
