Description

The Gary Paul Piantanida scholarship was established by Paul and Edna Piantanida in honor of their only son, Gary Paul Piantanida. Gary died of lymphatic leukemia at the age of 15. He attended San Luis Obispo High school and enjoyed playing basketball. Mr. Piantanida a descendant of Italian immigrants valued and held a strong work ethic. As a child, Paul helped support his family through the Great Depression. As an adult, he founded and ran two successful companies, served in World War II, and mentored Cal Poly students. Edna was an incredible woman with unbelievable style and grace working for Pacific Telephone for 38 years. The Piantanidas were married for 61 years.

The Community Foundation intends to award a total award value of $12,000. The scholarship will be distributed over a four year period, $3,000/year. Student may elect to begin post-secondary education at a two or four year college/university. However, if a student attends a community college he/she must maintain satisfactory academic progress so as to transfer to a four year college/university after two years.

Annually renewable if eligibility is maintained by enrolling and completing an average of 15 units per semester/quarter with a GPA of 2.5 or better.

Requirements

Eligibility:
1) Applicant is currently a senior at a San Luis Obispo County high school or homeschool and;
2) Applicant is planning to attend full-time at an approved four-year college. Student may begin study at a two year college and transfer
3) Applicant is a U.S. Citizen

Selection criteria:
a) Demonstration of satisfactory academic record; and,
b) Demonstration of involvement in their school and community activities throughout their high school years; and,
c) Demonstration of fInancial need; and,
d) Character traits- work ethic, dependability and integrity.

NOTE: Financial need must be demonstrated through Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) submittal.
