Description

A native San Franciscan, Roy grew up in Visitacion Valley very near Candlestick Park. As a child, his first passion was sports, especially baseball and football. He would walk to the ballpark as a little boy hoping to catch a glimpse of the game or one of his favorite players.

When he began school, it became his love and focus. He always had a deep interest in learning and the sciences are where he excelled. Roy got his undergraduate degree in Biology from the University of San Francisco. Roy’s desire for learning and education continued and a few years later he did his master’s degree in Environmental Studies, also at USF.

It was while he was an undergraduate that he met his best friend Pamela. Roy and Pamela’s friendship of 20+ years endured until his death at age 43. Their relationship was special and would pick up wherever it left off regardless of the passage of time. Each conversation began with Roy asking, “What did you learn today?” and he was always genuinely interested in the response.

Roy was that “go to” person who lit up a room with his wit and humor and was always there to lend a helping hand. He was the greatest teacher whether it was coaching his kids in soccer, baseball or swimming or giving his friends or co-workers a lesson in the fine points of fishing or city league softball. Teaching his wife how to drive a stick shift was the only one he couldn’t conquer!

To honor Roy and his lifelong commitment to learning, the Roy P. Luna Scholarship Fund was established by his wife and children to help a variety of underserved students pursue their college dreams. He had an enormous influence on many lives and continues today as he gently prods us to ask ourselves and each other, “What did you learn today?”
