Forbes Geil Scholarship 2021

This is the story of two community members who care deeply about their hometown and want to give back to others.

Janice L. Forbes was a native of Auburn, CA and attended Placer High School. After high school, she attended Mills College in Oakland, was elected to the Berkeley Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, and received her B.A. from the University of California, Davis. Janice will be remembered as the leading force in establishing Placer Community Foundation. A long-time board member of the private Auburn Community Foundation, she had a vision for local philanthropy in Placer County. She, along with other key members, understood the impact giving could have on current and future needs throughout the county. She also believed strongly in honoring and sharing the legacy of those who have chosen to give back to their place of home. Janice was a true leader and passionate champion of many causes. Her tireless work has contributed to the quality of life we all share in this county.

Ken Geil was born in Los Angeles and moved with his family to Auburn in 1948. He attended Placer High School, Sierra College and UC Berkeley, eventually graduating from Sac State with a BSCE. After college, Ken went to work in Auburn for Norm Andregg, a local land surveyor, as an engineer. He worked there from 1960 to 1977 when he started his own business, Geil Engineering.

In 1981, Ken got reacquainted with Janice “Booie” Forbes, whom he had known since grammar school when they first met during swim lessons at the DeWitt swimming pool. Janice hired Ken to survey her parents’ property in Shirland Tract and one thing led to another. They were married and lived a full life in Auburn, she as the publisher of Sierra Heritage Magazine and the Auburn Sentinel newspaper and he as co-owner of Geil Engineering. Sadly, Booie died in June of 2013. Ken considers himself fortunate to be in a position to offer this scholarship to help perpetuate the memory of his wife, who was a member of the Placer High School Hall of Fame. He recognizes that it can be very challenging to go to college without financial assistance and he seeks to support students who truly need the aid. Ken hopes this scholarship will be an incentive for students to further their education.

Requirements

-Student must be a graduating senior at Placer High School, located in Auburn, CA.
-Student must be pursuing further education and enrolling full time in a college or university setting or trade school.
-Priority will not be based upon GPA, but will be given to economically disadvantaged students and/or students with special needs.
-Completed application must be received no later than 12 noon on February 26, 2021. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Selection and Award Process:
1. Each year a selection panel comprised of members of the Placer Community Foundation’s Grants Committee and community representatives will award one student with a scholarship in the amount of $2,500, renewable for four years dependent on continued enrollment and satisfactory academic performance, on pace to graduate by completing the necessary units.

2. The selection panel will award scholarships based upon the student meeting the scholarship guidelines, as stated in the application form. Applicants may be called upon for an interview with the selection panel.

3. If awarded, a certificate may be presented to the recipient by a member of the Placer Community Foundation Grants Committee during the student’s school scholarship awards ceremony or in person. Student success stories may be featured in printed literature and media.

4. Scholarship funds are intended to help cover costs of tuition, books and instructional supplies. Disbursements will be paid in the amount of $1,250 each semester.
