Description

Carmen Tindall was born in Lakeport, California, on February 2, 1917 to Clarence E. and Blanche Tindall. A strong, tenacious woman, she came of age during the Great Depression. She had an incredible and full life. She graduated from Brett Harte High School in Angel's Camp in 1934, and the University of the Pacific in 1939. She was married happily to Johann (Joe) Wilson in 1942. Joe was a driving force in Carmen's life.

During World War II she worked in Modesto in the canneries on the "Victory shift," and as a drafts person at Miami Air Force Base. Then Joe and she ran a successful taxi company until moving to Auburn, California, in the early 1950s. In 1952 she gave birth to their son, Keith.

Carmen taught school in Auburn for over three decades at E.V. Cain and then as an art and English teacher at Placer High School. She was an artist, a painter, a designer, a chef, a world traveler, and on top of it all a philanthropist. Through all of her life her discipline and fine taste were exemplified in everything around her. She was a true lady. In August, 2010, Carmen passed away at the age of 93, leaving the gift of education in the form of scholarships.

This scholarship provides $4,000 to two students who graduated from Placer High School with an exceptional ability and talent in the area of Art, Music or English. The scholarship will help to cover the cost of tuition, books, and instructional supplies.

Requirements

-Student must have attended Placer High School, located in Auburn, CA.
-Student must be majoring in Art, Music or English at college or university.
-Student must be pursuing further education and enrolling full time in a college or university.
-Student must be entering first year of college or university.
-There is no age restriction on applicants.
-Completed application must be received no later than 12 noon on March 4, 2022. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Selection and Award Process:
1. Each year a selection panel comprised of members of the Placer Community Foundation’s Grants Committee and community representatives will award two students with a scholarship in the amount of $4,000.

2. The selection panel will award scholarships based upon the student meeting the scholarship guidelines, as stated in the application form. Applicants may be called upon for an interview with the selection panel.

3. If awarded, a certificate may be presented to the recipient by a member of the Placer Community Foundation Grants Committee during the student’s school scholarship awards ceremony or in person. Student success stories may be featured in printed literature and media.

4. Scholarship funds are intended to help cover costs of tuition, books and instructional supplies. Disbursements will be paid in the amount of $2,000 each semester.
