Al Saladana Scholarship 2022

Description

In recognition of his father, A. Jerald Saladana has established a scholarship in his father’s memory. The Al Saladana Scholarship Fund is a lasting legacy to the Saladana Family. After serving in the United States Army during World War I, Al Saladana returned to his home in Newcastle and attended Placer High School with his brother, John. In 1918-19 he played center position on the varsity basketball team; during that year the Placer Team was almost undefeated, only losing one game. After high school, Al partnered with Frank Dutra, his classmate during grammar school and operated the D & S Cash Grocery in downtown Newcastle. He and his basketball teammate Tom Whittemore had a fondness for the arts, and operated the first silent movie theatre at the Community Hall in Newcastle where they would show movies while Al’s wife, Margaret, played the piano. After Al’s partnership in the grocery store ended, he became a civil servant for the federal government. He used his skills as a life-long manager of the family ranches to work for the Department of Agriculture. The fund will award an annual scholarship to a student who has played on the varsity men’s basketball team at Placer High School to pursue higher education.

Requirements

-Student must be a graduating senior at Placer High School, located in Auburn, CA.
-Student must be pursuing further education and enrolling full time in a college or university setting or trade school.
-Student must be an active player on the boy's varsity basketball team.
-Completed application must be received no later than 12 noon on March 4, 2022. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Selection and Award Process:
1. Each year a selection panel comprised of community representatives will award one student with a one time scholarship in the amount of $2,000.

2. The selection panel will award scholarships based upon the student meeting the scholarship guidelines, as stated in the application form. Applicants may be called upon for an interview with the selection panel.

3. If awarded, a certificate may be presented to the recipient by a member of the Placer Community Foundation Grants Committee during the student’s school scholarship awards ceremony or in person. Student success stories may be featured in printed literature and media.

4. Scholarship funds are intended to help cover costs of tuition, books and instructional supplies. Disbursements will be paid in the amount of $1,000 each semester.
