Georgia O'Keeffe Art & Leadership Program

PROGRAM DEADLINE: January 31, 2023 at 11:59 PM CST (Midnight) - CLOSED

This program is inactive or past the deadline.

Description

There's nothing like real-world experience to enhance a resume and make a mark on the world. In honor of one of Kappa Delta's most notable alumnae, the Kappa Delta Foundation provides funding for two Kappa Delta collegians to serve as paid summer interns for the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum's Art and Leadership Program in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The O'Keeffe Art & Leadership Program was founded in 1998 to focus on the development of self-confidence, self-esteem, leadership skills, and self-expression in middle school girls. In 2002, the program opened its doors to young boys as well, recognizing that middle school aged children, as a whole, would benefit from the lessons and artistic journeys fostered within the program. As of 2021, the O'Keeffe decided to offer a gender inclusive program in order to give a more diverse, well-rounded, and comprehensive experience to all participants. The O'Keeffe Art and Leadership Program focuses on the exploration of creativity through art-making, theater, music, creative writing, and self-expression.

Participants learn collectively with a focus on independent thinking, building self-esteem, and strengthening self-respect. Professional museum staff, program leaders, interns, and teaching artists experienced in art education lead the program and serve as role models, offering children an oasis of positive support and encouragement. Together, they can better learn about moving past preconceived notions and growing into young adults that are comfortable and confident in their self-expression. As always, the program's main initiative is to foster young artists through creativity, leadership skills, self-confidence, self-expression, and identity development.

In 2008, the Art & Leadership Program received the Coming Up Taller Award from the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services designating it as one of the top fifteen youth development programs in the country.

Interns will assist and participate in professional guest-artist workshops, co-lead field trips, help prepare a final exhibition of student artwork, and develop an end-of-summer Zine. The Zine operates as a "yearbook" of everything that happened during the summer, including field trips, art projects, teaching artist workshops, etc. The Zine is created and designed by the interns, with support from the Art & Leadership Program Coordinator and the O'Keeffe Graphic Designer. Positions within the Zine include: editor-in-chief, design editor (layout), design editor (photography), graphic design editor, and writers.

The program includes interactions with various Museum staff and opportunities to interact with other interns and learn about other facets of Museum programming. Through engaging activities, the program attendees learn to use the resources in their environment to create a vision for themselves and to work toward achieving their dreams. Interns are paid $14 an hour/40 hours per week by the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Interns are responsible for their own transportation to and from Santa Fe and throughout the duration of the internship. A personal vehicle is strongly recommended.

The deadline for all Georgia O'Keeffe Art and Leadership for Girls Internship materials (application, resume and official transcript) is January 31, 2023 at 11:59 PM CST.

Generally, prospective interns are interviewed within four weeks of the application deadline, and notified of acceptance within six to eight weeks of the deadline. All forms must be completed electronically. Note: You may save your application and return to finish it at any time, but it must be completed by January 31, 2023 to remain eligible. A confirmation email will be sent to your primary email upon completion.
