Description

After graduating from Montclair High School, Jill Ann Newman Slansky was the recipient of a private scholarship which was very helpful in funding her college education. At the age of 50, she decided give something back to the community she grew up in. She established the Jill Ann Newman Scholarship Fund at the Community Foundation in 1996, which benefits graduates of Montclair High School who are pursuing a career in education.

Jill's career as an educator has given her many wonderful opportunities. She taught in New Jersey, Colorado, New Mexico and Idaho. In 2005, she retired after 22 years as a national consultant for a major educational publisher. In this role, she provided professional development for educators in 48 states and 3 foreign countries.

Jill feels that the scholarship she received when she was at Montclair High School helped her acquire an excellent education and launch her career. She is very grateful for the assistance and that someone believed in her.

Award Information
1 award of $2,000 is awarded each year. This scholarship is not renewable.

Requirements

Students selected to receive this scholarship must:
  • be graduating seniors from Montclair High School in Montclair, New Jersey
  • continue their education at an accredited college, university, career or technical school during the upcoming school year
  • plan to pursue a career in education, with preference given to students specializing in elementary or special education
  • demonstrate academic achievement
  • have participated in various school activities
