Description

The Helen and Ronald Dunin Legacy Scholarship was established to honor the legacy of the Dunins’ desire to help people who are attempting to help themselves.

Ron Dunin was born in Prussia on March 8, 1918. From 1938-1945 Ron was a member of the Polish forces in Poland, France and United Kingdom, and was decorated by the governments of all three countries for his exemplary service. Dunin was captured by German forces and spent time in a German prisoner of war camp, but managed to escape and return to Poland. He later fled to Hungary.

In 1945, Dunin settled in Great Britain, where he met his future wife, Helen. In 1963, Ron and Helen moved to the United States settling in San Luis Obispo in 1965. Dunin served on the San Luis Obispo City Council for 15 years, and was elected mayor of San Luis Obispo, a position he occupied for seven years, 1985-1992.

  • GPA:  Minimum of 2.7 to a maximum of 3.7 on a 4.0 scale
  • Demonstrated Financial Need: Yes
  • Type of College: 4-year college/university
  • Major: not considered
  • Other Requirements: Must graduate from a San Luis Obispo County high school AND be a first generation college student
  • Renewable: No
The committee intends to award two multi-year scholarships as a $12,000 step-up award:

$4,000 year four
