Description

The Diablo Black Men's Group (DBMG) is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization which provides scholarships to college-bound African-American males students graduating from high schools in Contra Costa and Alameda counties. These one-time scholarships, which are awarded to selected applicants in the Spring of each academic year, range from $1,000 to $5,000.

Requirements

SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY

There is no requirement to show financial need to receive this scholarship!

1. All Applicants must be high school seniors who will graduate at the end of the academic calendar year (Spring time frame). Individuals who have already graduated from high school or received a GED, but have never attended a college or university as a full-time student are also eligible to apply.

2. All applicants must reside in Alameda/Contra Costa Counties.

3. Community service: participants volunteer within their community or their school.

4. Have a overall Grade Point Average of at least 2.5.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT

5. All scholarship awardees must attend a 2 hour DBMG Scholars Award Presentation Event.

The date of this event will determined after scholarship award notification.

6. Parents or guardian(s) of selected scholarship awardees will be encouraged to attend the DBMG Scholars Award Celebration.

7. Participation in the creation of our 2024 DBMG scholarship awards video. Awardees will be asked to either record or sit for a video. They will also need to sign a release for use of the video and photo.

8. All scholarship awardees must submit an official high school graduation photo to be used by DBMG in promotional materials.

APPLICATION SUBMISSION

Applicants must submit the following:

1. A completed DBMG Scholarship Application must be completed online and have an online stamp of May 1, 2024 or before. All fields must be completed. Enter 'N/A' in those fields that don't apply to you.

All applications must include your photo and a link to a short video posted to YouTube.  (You can make this a public or private video.)

2. Two personal letters of recommendation from a school counselor, teacher, community representative or others.

3. List of colleges and/or universities where you have applied and any acceptance letters that you have recieved.

4. A scanned copy of an academic transcript from your school.

5. A written essay that describes your opinion or point of view on one of the five topics below:

a) Immigration,
b) Health Care,
c) Race Relations
d) Gun Control
e) COVID-19 

Your essay should be from 500 to 750 words (typed and DOUBLE SPACED) and submitted with your application.

6. A personal biographical essay of 250 - 300 words (typed and DOUBLE SPACED) must be included with your application. The biography should include your college and/or career objectives, leadership abilities and your involvement in the community.

NOTES OF INTEREST

# Scholarship disbursement will be made directly to the college or university that you will be attending. Once student receives his acceptance letter, the following items will be required to disburse scholarship grant.

a) Student ID Number

b) Official name and address where to send the DBMG grant check and a contact phone number.

# All scholarship grants must be paid out within one (1) year from the date of the DBMG scholarship award letter.

# This is a one-time non renewable scholarship award.

DEADLINES:

Your DBMG scholarship application, including all required materials, must be received by midnight, May 1, 2024.


Scholarship winners will be notified by May 20, 2024.
