Description

The Adrienne M. and Charles Shelby Rooks Fellowship for Racial and Ethnic Theological Students was established to support the seminary education of members of the United Church of Christ who are from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in our church and who are committed to serving the United Church of Christ.

The Rooks Fellowship Scholarship for Master of Divinity Support provides grants for the seminary education of members of the United Church of Christ who are African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, Native American Indian or Pacific Islander and enrolled in a Master of Divinity program at an accredited theological school.

Rooks Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, educational fees charged by the educational institution, books, room and board and basic living expenses (housing, food). Payment will be made to the seminary or theological school of the recipient. Rooks Scholars may request scholarship funds from the institution for basic living expenses.

Requirements

An applicant will:
  • be a member of a local church congregation of the United Church of Christ;
  • be from an underrepresented ethnic group (such as African American, Hispanic American, Asian American, Native American Indian, or Pacific Islander);
  • have begun the Member in Discernment process with an Association of the United Church of Christ by the time of application;
  • be a full-time or part-time student;
  • be enrolled in a Master of Divinity program at a theological school which is accredited by the Association of Theological Schools and which includes in its curriculum provision for adequate instruction in the history and polity of the United Church of Christ;
  • have at least a B grade point average in all post high school academic studies;
  • demonstrate, through written narrative, the ability to express ideas in sequence using appropriate, standard language.
Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated leadership through a history of service to the church and scholarship through exceptional academic performance and who intend to become pastors and teachers within local churches of the United Church of Christ.
