2024 Florence Jessen Scholarship

PROGRAM DEADLINE: April 30, 2024 at 11:59 PM PDT (Midnight)

Description

Florence Jessen was born in Portland, OR in 1909, and moved to Stevenson, WA in 1940. She built a home with her husband on what is now Rock Creek Drive, before the dam, and before flood control. There are photos of the floods, back then, and she occasionally had the Columbia River in her front yard. She loved her home and the water, though, and still lived in the same house until the time of her death, in July 1998.

As Florence got on in years, her interests were more focused in her home, and the quiet lifestyle she so enjoyed in Stevenson. She could listen to the children playing in the park across the street at midday. She often thought about the future, and what her rural community needed most.

By the time Florence Jessen passed away, she had done the necessary planning to assure her estate would help students in her own community receive scholarship help for college. She left her entire estate to the Community Foundation and asked that they establish a permanent scholarship fund for graduating seniors of Stevenson High School who wanted to further their education.

Award Information
This fund awards a total of about $35,000 each year in varying amounts. This scholarship is not renewable.

Requirements

Students selected to receive this scholarship must be graduating high school seniors from Stevenson High School who plan to continue their education at an accredited college, university, career, or technical school during the following school year.
