ENMU - Roswell Robert L. Chewning Scholarship

PROGRAM DEADLINE: September 06, 2024 at 12:30 AM MDT

Description

Robert Lynn "Bob" Chewning was born near the head waters of the Berrendo River in Roswell, New Mexico. During the Depression of 1929-1933, he was taken out of school to work with and for his older brother. He educated himself on vehicle repair, taking night jobs and was an avid guitar player who played in a country band on the weekends. After he married Louise Jones in 1940, he enlisted in the army as World War II began. After his discharge from the military, he worked in retail where he would later open his own shoe store with partner, Ray Richmond. Bob and his partner would eventually own three stores in the Roswell area. He has served on many community boards throughout the years and was proud of his heritage and family. His two daughters, MaryLou and Susan have followed his examples by giving back to their community by becoming educators. Bob was a strong advocate for ENMU-Roswell and to the students who attended here.

The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance for tuition, fees, books, and/or program
expenses for a student attending ENMU-Roswell during the fall and spring terms. The award amount varies and is left to the discretion of the scholarship committee.
